How To Regenerate DPF Filter By Yourself

When you find your DPF warning light on, you need to perform the below procedures to keep your Diesel Particulate Filter working normally. Otherwise, you will find the DPF warning light will flash, and soon later the DPF will be blocked and your engine will accelerate slowly.

  1. Don’t ignore a warning light
    • It should be possible to complete an active regeneration cycle and clear the warning light by driving for 10 minutes or so at speeds over 40mph.
    • Remember: drive at speeds over 40mph, and the RPM (revs) of your engine should be at least 2500 RPM.
  2. Drive in 3rd gear
  3. It is recommended to get on the motorway
    • Do it when it’s safe to do so, please.
  4. Keep driving for at least 10 to 15 minutes even after the warning light is gone
    • If you do not, the light will come back on very soon.

Feedback about this solution from readers:

  1. Blocked DPF: That is a solution, but if the DPF is blocked for a long time, this is useless unfortunately.
  2. Limp mode: When it doesn’t work, your car will go into limp mode. Then it’s time to visit the mechanic. Here is a guide on Ford Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Static Regeneration Guide by specialist device.
  3. Prevention is key: This should be done regularly right from the start and not wait for the light to come on. The secret is to keep the RPMs up regularly even on local roads. Do that, and you’ll never have an issue with the DPF.
  4. Success story: Just did something similar with a BMW 520d. Drove for about 40 minutes like this and then deleted the DPF code with a scanner. All the power is back now, very pleased.
