Honda Civic Diesel Particulate Filter Regeneration by Honda HDS

This article shows a guide on how to use Honda HDS to regenerate Honda Diesel Particulate Filter. Check these operations; you will not only gain the skill to regenerate DPF on your Honda vehicle by yourself but also save a dozen dollars.

Procedures:

Prepare the Vehicle

    • Make sure the engine temperature reaches around 76°C or at least close to it.
    • Park the vehicle in a safe place where engine noise won’t disturb others, and ensure there’s no flammable material beneath the car (as the DPF temperature can rise above 600°C).
    • Open the hood.
    • Disable all unnecessary electrical components (e.g., interior lights), and avoid turning them back on during the process.

Setup the Honda HDS System

    • Connect the HIM (Honda Interface Module) to the car and your computer.
    • Start the Honda HDS software.
    • Turn the ignition switch to the “II” position.
    • In HDS, press “Select a new vehicle” and enter the mileage.

Select the System

    • Navigate to the “System” menu.
    • Select “Diesel.”

Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

    • In the DTC menu, select “DTC – given frozen data” and delete any existing codes.
    • Ensure there are no issues with DPF sensors. If sensor problems exist, resolve them before proceeding.

Access Regeneration Settings

    • Go back to the “Settings” menu.
    • Select “DPF Regeneration.”

Start the Engine

    • Turn on the engine.
    • Activate the headlights and switch the air conditioner to ON mode.

Monitor Engine Temperature

    • If the engine temperature is insufficient, the HDS will prompt you to accelerate the engine to a range between 1600 and 2400 RPM.
    • Once the required temperature is reached, release the accelerator as the HDS takes control.

Regeneration Process

    • During regeneration, the engine will automatically increase to 3000 RPM and stabilize at 1500 RPM.
    • After completing regeneration, the engine will briefly return to 3000 RPM to cool down the exhaust line.

Final Steps

    • Exit the Honda HDS program.
    • Turn off the engine.
    • Disconnect the HIM cables.
    • Take the car for a short drive to ensure the exhaust line cools down properly.
